Melba House was built on the Marian Plantation in 1882/83 for the first Marian Mill Manager, Charles Armstrong and his wife Helen (Nellie) Porter Mitchell. It remained used as the Mill Manager’s residence until the mid 1900s. In 1994 Melba House was moved 2.5km from the Mill grounds to its current position in Edward Lloyd Park at Marian. Helen (Nellie) Porter Mitchell later became the world famous and much loved opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba. Today, Melba House features a memorabilia display dedicated to Nellie. The house is now home to a fully accredited Visitor Information Centre and a local craft shop.
