17 June 2008 - Fremantle - what a beautiful place, Freo is full of lovely old buildings painstakingly restored as you can see. We had fish and chips at "Joe's Fish Shack" on the wharf at Fishing Boat Harbour........as you do........yum....
The tunnel below was dug out in the 1800's through a solid wall of limestone for the whalers to use. After the whales were caught and boiled up on the deck of the boats, the boiled up stuff was put into barrels, taken to shore (with whale fat in them I think) and rolled through the tunnel to town to sell at the markets and taken away on the container ships. The whaling industry closed down and the tunnel no longer had a use. Good thing too.
