06 Jul 08 - Broome - The Old Lockup Gallery - here is some art work by aboriginals - margo is finding it quite interesting and I think David is too........the pearl shell is one of many - it has been carved and coloured with pindan - they are worn when young boys become men.......the shell is tied around the boys' hips and slung low to cover their you-know-what, strands of a woman's hair are used to tie it on. During this manhood ritual the boy/man keeps away from any females until all the ritual is completed. The painting is a "Wanjina" - the sort margo really likes but this is not the first wanjina this is a helper wanjina and it is the rain wanjina.
